This policy explains how the Animal Welfare Investigations Project (“AWIP”, “we”) collects and uses your personal data when you sign a petition, respond to a poll, or donate through this website. The data controller is [AWIP registered legal name], [registered address], [ICO registration number].

What we collect

• Details you give us when signing or responding: first name, last name, email, and (optionally) postcode/ZIP and phone number, plus your poll answers.
• Consent record: the wording you agreed to and the date/time you agreed.
• Campaign attribution: UTM parameters and referrer of the link you arrived through, and your approximate country (from your IP) to show the right currency and language.
• Technical data: your browser’s user-agent and the page you submitted from, used for security and to prevent abuse.
• Donations are processed by Fundraise Up and Stripe; we receive a confirmation (amount, currency) but never your card details.

How we use it & our lawful basis

• To record your petition signature or poll response and show aggregate results — legitimate interests / your consent.
• To send you campaign updates — consent, given when you tick or submit the form. You can withdraw it any time (see below).
• To process and acknowledge donations — contract / legitimate interests.
• To keep the service secure and prevent fraud/abuse — legitimate interests.

Who we share it with

We use trusted processors who act on our instructions: Fundraise Up and Stripe (donations), [email provider, e.g. MailerLite] (campaign emails), and our hosting provider (Vercel). We do not sell your personal data.

Cookies & similar storage

• Necessary: a session cookie for admin login, a locale cookie (cos_locale) to set your currency and wording, and the cookies Fundraise Up/Stripe set to process a donation you start.
• Analytics / attribution (non-essential): we store the UTM/referrer of your visit to understand which campaigns work. In the EU/UK we only do this if you accept via the cookie banner.

How long we keep it

We keep signature, poll and donation records for [retention period], and only as long as necessary for the purposes above or to meet legal obligations.

Your rights

You can ask to access, correct, or delete your data, object to or restrict its use, or withdraw consent — including unsubscribing from emails using the link in any message, or by emailing [privacy@awip.org]. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) or your local supervisory authority.
